If you have never been to the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland then you are truly missing out. As soon as you can (may I suggest once you’ve read this article) get onto a booking site and find yourself some suitable accommodation, then get planning the adventure of a lifetime. There is so much to see and do there that you will find yourself returning time and time again.
At the time of writing this article I have been 5 times. There is still so much that I am yet to see and visit on the Island. I highly recommend choosing to visit in different conditions and seasons. The views all over the island are truly breathtaking and great photo opportunities can be found round every bend in the road. I hope you enjoy my current top 5 photos from the Isle of Skye.
Please comment in the area below and share your stories of the places you like to visit on the Isle of Skye. These are my Top 5 Isle of Skye photographs.
This sunrise print was captured on a very early morning summer shoot on the Isle of Skye. I feel the final image was well worth the 2am alarm call to get up and drive to the Old man of Stor. For thse who haven’t managed the hike up to this viewpoint it took myself around 1hour. Some were passing me on the way, some I overtook on the way. Yes, still busy even when I set off up the hill at 3am. This 50 megapixel image was captured using my Canon 5dsr camera as low as possible on my Manfrotto tri-pod. It did seem relatively calm until I made the final push to the top of a ridge where it was far more exposed. This image is part of my Scottish Islands Portfolio, which contains many other Isle of Skye prints.
This sunrise print was captured one early summer morning walking down from the Old Man of Stor on the Isle of Skye. I nearly didn’t take this image as I thought the moment would pass too quickly to set my gear up. I was tired from the early morning hike up the Stor and had the car park in sight. I walked slightly off the path, hunkered down low to escape any camera shake and took the image. My 50 megapixel Canon 5dsr camera together with the Manfrotto tri-pod helped capture this beautiful sunrise image. This image is part of my Scottish Islands Portfolio, which contains many other Isle of Skye prints.
This image is one of my favourite Sligachan prints. Yet it was one of my most frustrating and difficult images to capture. It is not the image that I wanted but I really like the composition and final outcome. Sligachan and in particular the bridge can be a very popular place for tourists. Trying to get an image with nobody in the shot was very difficult indeed. After an hour of scouting locations I decided to walk up stream and hide in front of a small mound. I used my Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens to capture this image. I wanted to capture as much of the landscape as possible. I really love the boulders in this image, they look like stepping stones across the river. This image is part of my Scottish Islands Portfolio, which contains many other Isle of Skye prints.
4 – The Quiraing
Stunning sunrise image of one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks on the Isle of Skye, known as the Quiraing. Safe to say there were quite a few photographers up on the ridge that morning. Despite that fact, not one of them, including a workshop of around 10, was in the spot that I wanted. I used my Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens to capture this image as I really wanted the entire road in the foreground and thanks to that lens, I was able to achieve just that. I really love the clouds in this image, if you look really close it looks to me like a mini tornado is whipping up in the background. This image is part of my Scottish Islands Portfolio, which is a great place to look if you are looking for Isle of Skye prints.
5 – Elgol Rocks
If you have been to the Isle of Skye and have yet to make the long winding drive down to Elgol then I highly recommend it. The drive itself is worth the 30 minute or so journey with stunnng scenes round every bend. At Elgol the views looking over Loch Scavaig towards the Black Cuillins are truly breathtaking, whatever the weather. The sunsets from this location are something else too. I am yet to be at Elgol for sunset be I still like the composition and moody nature of the wet weather captured in this image. This image means a lot to me as my 10 year old daughter scrambled over the wet rocks to hold the umbrella over my camera equipment. A team effort. This image is part of my Scottish Islands Portfolio, which contains many other Isle of Skye prints.

Great images Chris. I would add a few other places on the Island. The fairy pools are amazing. Neist Point lighthouse and the Old Man of Stor are also great for photography.
Hi Pauline
I would totally agree with you. I have an image from Neist Point ready to go on the list.
Sadly, the last time I was at the Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Stor, the weather was atrocious. I will get back there again some time.
