Out of all the wonderful places in the Lake District national park, I always find myself returning to Buttermere year after year. The views are truly breathtaking and great photo opportunities can be found round every bend in the road. I hope you enjoy my personal top 5 Buttermere photography locations from this beautiful area of the Lake District. Please comment in the area below and tell others which places you like to visit when in and around Buttermere.
1 – Warnscale Bothy
This image was captured on a cold and frosty winters day in the Lake District. Initially the weather was very poor when I arrived on location at the car park. I sat there and watched cars arrive and depart as the weather was just atrocious. I finally plucked up the courage and set off up the track towards Warnscale Bothy. The walk took around 2 hours as I was stopping for photo opportunities. As I arrived at the bothy the weather looked really dramatic and the atmosphere was just great. I wanted to capture the feelings and emotions I had at that time and hope that comes across in the image here. Why not have a peek at the Black and White version and see which you prefer?
2 – Buttermere View
This image was captured on a cold and frosty winters afternoon in the Lake District. Initially the weather was very poor so I took the opportunity to just go for a nice long hike in the fells around Buttermere. This contributed greatly to my Lake District framed prints portfolio as thankfully during the course of the afternoon the weather really improved and I was able to get the camera out. Originally this was the location of a bench providing much need rest and of course a cracking view down the mere. I am not too sure why it was replaced, maybe it was rotten, nevertheless the new structure provides some great foreground interest as seen in my final image here. If you like this image you may want to view my other Buttermere photography.
After taking some of the more well known images at Buttermere, I turned to the right and noticed this lovely and rather symmetrical group or ‘Copse’ of trees over the other side of the mere. With the help of my 70-200mm lens I was able to get in tight and frame this image the way I did. I really like the waterfall running down the hill and the reflection I have created in the water too with the help of the Lee Little Stopper filter. I enjoyed pushing the boundaries of the image in Lightroom to give it a more unique feel.
4 – Haystacks View
This image was captured one early summers morning in Lake District. It was a very early start, around 4.30am to get there in time for the sunrise. After some earlier shots I really liked the way the light started creeping down the mountain as the sun rose higher in the sky. Haystacks summit is very interesting and contains a number of attractive rock formations and tarns.
5 – Buttermere Hut
This image was captured at wintertime in the Lake District. I was stood on the roadside of Buttermere looking over the water towards this well photographed hut with the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains behind. I really like the way the snow line looks like it is creeping its way down the mountain side.

Hi Chris
Thanks for showing your best images. I would add the Lone Tree at Buttermere as a must take photo. Great at all times of the year too.
Thanks
